DAR presents community awards at Tea

On Saturday, Feb. 10, the General Samuel Hopkins Chapter, NSDAR held their 122nd Awards Tea at St Paul’s Episcopal Church. All attendees participated in the patriotic opening exercises and enjoyed the singing of our National Anthem by Janet Barkley, music educator at Holy Name School.

The local chapter then presented awards to the following people:

Community Service Award: This award is for a local citizen who over the last five years has donated significant volunteer hours in pursuit of activities of benefit to the community. The local chapter this year awarded Two Community Service Awards. One was given to Charles Crabtree and one was awarded to James Hanley. Both of these men have given decades of volunteer service to our local veterans.

Charlie Crabtree, a Vietnam War veteran has served in the United States, navy, Army and Air Force. He was instrumental in the founding of the Veterans’ Day Program at South Middle School over 37 years ago and he continues to help in that effort. Charlie also played a huge role in obtaining funding and designing the statue for native son Admiral Husband Kimmel that now is situated on our waterfront His peers estimate that he donates 550 to 600 hours a year to promoting veteran events.

Jim Hanley, Commander of Worsham Post 40 of the American Legion Honor Guard has labored over many years in the creation, maintenance and placing of the white crosses in our Central Park every Memorial Day to honor those veterans of Henderson County who have now passed away. Jim also assists all veterans in getting their benefits and he makes sure that any veteran who needs transportation to a doctor or medical facility in KY, IL or IN gets help. As Commander of the Honor Guard, Jim sees to it that any family who desires a military salute for their deceased service member obtains such a dignified service. His burial detail sometimes has several funerals in one day. Jim is a Vietnam veteran and his peers estimate that he donates 840 to 900 hours a year in service to veterans.
